What better place than Rancho Gallina (the Chicken Ranch) to hatch brilliant new ideas, plans, and projects? We have endeavored to provide not just a tranquil and convenient setting, but also a retreat environment that reflects a commitment to sustainability.
We are a solar-powered facility that uses both hi-tech (geothermal heating/cooling) and low-tech (drip irrigation, composting) methods to minimize energy, water, and waste. And we cook with healthy, farm-fresh, organic ingredients sourced as locally as possible. From our menus to our renovations, Rancho Gallina reflects the rich culture and high desert environment of our New Mexico setting.
The ranch sits in a beautiful location right off the historic Turquoise Trail. Easily accessible from both Santa Fe and Albuquerque (by car, shuttle or train), we are still off the beaten path enough to forget the daily grind and focus on the big picture, plan a long-term strategy, strengthen your team, or launch something new.
Our facilities include two big conference rooms with plenty of additional break-out space, a large dining room for shared meals and many gorgeous outdoor spaces. The ranch is big enough for a pretty large gathering (the great room could easily seat 35). We can currently sleep up to 12 overnight, but there is an additional cottage next door and several other inns within a few miles to house additional guests.
For relaxation we have running, walking, hiking, biking right out the door; a hand-built cedar soaking hot tub out in a field with mountain views and a full stargazing sky; outdoor fire pits, gardens, bocci ball, frisbee or soccer areas; and various exercise equipment and musical instruments. There is no shortage of diversions to help clear the mind and get you back to work renewed and refreshed.
Your hosts, Mitch and Leslie, serve up some of the best food and coffee anywhere, with loads of experience in the kitchen, including Mitch’s training at the International Culinary Center in NYC. We prepare healthy, seasonal meals from scratch with a Southwestern flair.
But more importantly, we have nearly 50 years of collective experience in leadership in the labor, non-profit and social change movement.* As successful local and national leaders, in both elected and staff roles, we know how change works…and doesn’t. We would be happy to help facilitate or lend our thoughts, experience or ideas to your conversation. Or we could just leave you alone and supply you with a wonderful setting and delicious food – your choice!
In addition to our general experience, we have tons of subject matter expertise in: labor, community and political organizing, organizational and leadership development, change theory, and strategic power analysis, as well as on issues as diverse as: health care, affordable housing, city/state/federal policy, community benefits campaigns, environmental justice, and more. We have worked with large and diverse boards and staff and have extensive coalition building experience. Just ask and it may well be in our repertoire.
*Leslie was a co-founder and first Executive Director of the Partnership for Working Families, co-founder of the Front Range Economic Strategy Center (FRESC), and is President emeritus of the Denver Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO. Mitch was International Executive Vice-President of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) as well as its Colorado local president for 10 years. Together they helped lead the political transformation of Colorado as well as raise thousands of workers from dead-end, poverty jobs to family supporting wages with benefits.
